What To Do When Your Child Asks If You Are Poor

When your child asks if you are poor, do not panic and do not lie about being rich. Say you work, you pay what you can, and this house is not a shame.

The question often comes after a classmate's gadget. They are asking if they are safe, not if they should file taxes.

What is a calm answer?

"We are careful with money. We have food. We are okay. Some kids have more toys. That does not mean you are less." Then stop. Extra speeches leak fear.

What should you not do?

Do not mock them. Do not overspend the next day to win. Do not blame the other parent. The child asked for weather, not a storm.

How do you follow it at home?

Keep rituals that cost little: a story, a walk, rice together. Safety is a feeling repeated, not a laptop.

Frequently asked questions

What if you actually cannot pay something?
Age-appropriate honesty: we are solving it. Adults carry the number. Children carry the tone.

What if they ask again in public?
Short answer, private follow-up. Do not perform poverty or wealth for an audience.
