How To Talk To Your Son About Being A Man

Talk to your son about being a man by showing him how you treat people, then using short, plain sentences: a man keeps his word, protects the weak, and does not need to humiliate anyone to feel tall.

If you only preach, he will copy what you did in traffic, not what you said at dinner.

When should you start?

Before the internet becomes his father. Short talks at 7, 10, 13. Not one long speech at 18 when the barkada already has a louder microphone.

What should you actually say?

Say that crying is information, not a crime. Say that work is how we eat, not how we prove we are better than our wife. Say that girls are not a scoreboard. Say that money is a tool, not a personality.

Then let him watch you apologize. That lesson is louder than a quote.

What if you were not given a good father?

Then you are the first draft. Tell him that too. "I am learning. I will not pretend I already know." A son can respect a man who is in progress. He cannot respect a man who lies about being finished.

Frequently asked questions

What if my son does not want to talk?
Do the ritual anyway: one car ride, one chore together, one question. Lectures bounce. Shared work sticks.

Should I teach him to fight?
Teach him to walk away when he can and to protect when he must. A man who only knows how to swing will use it on the wrong day.
