How To Leave Work At The Gate

You leave work at the gate by naming the shift as finished, standing still for two minutes, and walking in as a husband or father — not as a still-clocked-in employee.

The jeep can take your body home while your mind is still arguing with a supervisor. That is how a decent job becomes a cruel evening.

Why is the gate the right place?

Because if you wait until the sofa, the first person you see will receive the traffic. A gate, a hallway, a parked motorcycle — pick a line the office is not allowed to cross.

What do you actually say?

Out loud or in your head: "Shift is done. They are not my enemy." Then water. Then one true sentence to whoever is home. Short is kinder than a speech you have not unpacked.

What if the job follows you on the phone?

Unless it is a real emergency, the message can wait an hour. A man who is always available to work is slowly unavailable to the people who eat with him.

Frequently asked questions

Is this unprofessional?
Protecting the house is part of staying employed without becoming a weapon. You can still be excellent tomorrow.

What if I work from a small room at home?
Close the laptop. Same gate, shorter walk. The ritual still counts.
