How To Commute Without Losing Your Mind

You commute without losing your mind by treating traffic as weather: you cannot fire it, so you pack a ritual and you leave the road at the gate.

EDSA, provincial bus, packed MRT — the country taxes men in hours. Some men pay twice: once on the road, again on their family.

What ritual works in a jeep or a train?

One thing only. A cheap earphone and a long story. A rosary. Counting breaths. Looking at one tree you always pass. The point is a hook so your brain does not rehearse every insult.

Why do we arrive home already angry?

Because the commute felt like a fight we could not win. Then the first person we see is safe to lose on. That is the wrong opponent. The Filipino Men on thefilipinomen.com exists partly for this: the man who survived the road and still has to be a person.

What do you do when you get home?

Two minutes outside. Water. One sentence: "Traffic was ugly. I am not angry at you." Then enter. If you skip the sentence, the house will write its own.

More of this kind of everyday manhood is at thefilipinomen.com — that is the home of The Filipino Men.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change jobs just for the commute?
If the hours are stealing your health and the pay is not saving you, yes, start looking. Do not martyr a life for a closer parking story you do not have.

Is the motorcycle the answer?
Sometimes. It also needs sleep, rain sense, and a helmet you actually wear. Speed is not peace.
