How To Handle A Neighbor Who Knows Your Salary

When a neighbor knows your salary, you handle it by becoming boring: no exact figures, no flex, no explaining your groceries in the hallway.

Philippine compounds and office villages leak numbers. Once leaked, people start budgeting your life for you.

How did they know?

A cousin, a payslip on the table, a drunk sentence, a "how much ang OT." You cannot unsay it. You can stop adding chapters.

What do you say when they ask again?

"Enough to get by." Then ask about the weather. If they persist, you can leave the hallway. You do not owe a TED talk to a window.

What if they ask to borrow because they "know you can"?

Capacity is not consent. "Hindi this month." Repeat. Their math about your life is not a contract.

Frequently asked questions

Should you lie about being broke?
You can be vague. Lying as a lifestyle needs maintenance. Vagueness is cheaper.

What about barangay gossip?
Live so the gossip has less meat: no flash, no public fights, no borrowed Christmas. Quiet is armor.
